Bealtaine Festival – Tommy Darcy Exhibition

St. Pappins Nursing Home are celebrating Bealtaine Festival with an exhibition of resident, Tommy Darcy’s artwork. Tommy is a fine artist and his paintings have previously featured in The Stream, Silver Stream Healthcare Group’s newsletter.

The exhibition will open on May 22nd with a “Cheese & Wine Reception” parallel to our Relative’s Information & Support Group meeting at 3pm. His artwork will be displayed upstairs on the mezzanine and all are welcome.

Bealtaine Festival is a celebration of creativity in older age & Tommy’s artwork is a perfect example of this – we are proud to have such a talented & creative resident and would like to invite you all to view his work.

Brave Sylwia Abseils For Age Action Ireland

Our brave girl, Sylwia MacieJizak abseiled down The Clarion Hotel in Limerick for Age Action Ireland on behalf of Nenagh Manor Nursing Home. Sylwia raised a lot of money for Age Action by doing this abseil. Nenagh Manor sponsored Sylwia’s registration fee in order for her take part in this once in a life time opportunity, the rest of the hard work Sylwia did herself raising over €250 in additional sponsorship and of course abseiling 17 stories from the top of the Clarion Hotel to the ground!!. The event took place on Saturday 28th of April and full training was given to Sylwia on the day. Age Action is a national charity, which works to improve the quality of life of all older people, especially those who are most disadvantaged and vulnerable. Through their programmes and campaigns they work to enable the elderly to live full, independent and satisfying lives. They also work closely to support the carers of older people. Although the number of older people in Ireland is growing steadily, many face considerable difficulties such as the threat of poverty, age discrimination and inadequate access to quality services such as community care, the health services and rural transport. Age Action is working at local level with groups of older people, while also campaigning at national level to influence policy makers to address these problems. Your support will help them to:

Brave Sylwia scales the dizzy heights of The Clarion

Roll out their “Care and Repair” project, which carries out small repairs to older people’s homes and also operates a home visitation service.
Expand their “Getting Started” programme, which trains older people to use computers and the Internet.
Promote their “Dignity in Care” programme, which promotes the value and importance of dignity in care settings, improving the quality of care for older people.
Further develop our “University of the Third Age (U3A)” network, which supports the establishment of groups of older people for educational and social get-togethers.
Provide information about rights and entitlements to the thousands of callers who contact our “Information Service” each year.

North Tipperary Hospice Donation

The residents of Nenagh Manor Nursing Home recently held a sale of their own work to raise funds for the North Tipperary Hospice. Pictured here, are two representatives of the hospice, (pictured left to right is) Brendan Nevin, Sandra O’Neill, Gerry Cantwell (Rep), Maura Power, Margaret Hickey, Kay Donohue (Rep), and Care Assistant, Maureen Butler. Maura Power was heavily involved with organising the event with our Activities Coordinator, Corann Clifford. Maura knitted a great number of scarves and hats and donated them to the Sale of Work – also our family members and staff donated little bits and bobs from home. All together €583.60 was raised on the day. A huge thank you to every one who was involved.

Care Local – A New Partnership in Caring

In a direct effort to continually improve the quality of life of its residents, Silver Stream Healthcare has invited Care Local, a charity dedicated to acting on the needs of older people, to begin providing its important services in Leeson Park House and Killiney Grove nursing-homes.

Leeson Park House has opened its doors to Care Local’s mealtime companion programme, Plate Pals. Plate Pal volunteers provide one-on-one encouragement at mealtimes, recreating a cosy family-like dining atmosphere. Research has shown that companionship at mealtimes results in increased caloric intake and this important programme has proven positive outcomes in St. Mary’s Hospital and Claremont Nursing-Home where staff have reported weight-gain and increased communication.

Killiney Grove is welcoming the Befriending programme, providing a weekly visit to respond to loneliness felt by those residents in need of a little more company. Volunteers are carefully matched with residents with the aim of creating long-term friendships.Care Local has 37 years experience providing services to older people in Dublin; with 150 volunteers providing friendly visits and mealtime companionship Care Local brings expertise in volunteer coordination. Care Local staff and volunteers look forward to a long partnership in caring with Silver Stream Healthcare.

Bealtaine, the national festival celebrating creativity in older age, is coordinated by Age & Opportunity and includes events organised by hundreds of partner organisations. The festival encourages greater participation in the arts by older people as artists and performers, participating as both event organisers and audiences, everywhere from national institutions to local parish halls. The ethos is one of fun, empowerment and exploration.

The Bealtaine Festival has roots in 27 counties with 592 organisers hosting over 3000 events. Last year over 120,000 people took part in all kinds of arts activities from Dawn Chorus’s of singing choirs on beaches to theatre and film tours in arts centres nationwide.

As the country’s largest collaborative Arts Festival, Bealtaine is locally owned by communities but retains an enviable reputation as the world’s first national celebration of creativity in older age.ScotlandandAustraliaare laying the foundations for their own similar festivals and we expect this year’s Irish festival to even bigger and better!

2012 is the European year of Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations so we particularly welcome opportunities to bring young and old participants and organisers together this year to help explore the festival theme ‘What kind of old do you want to be’?
